The Pre-Shoot Environment Checklist
A successful studio production hinges on environmental control, equipment readiness, and client hospitality. Walking onto a prepared set ensures client confidence and eliminates costly delays during the session.
1. Power, Storage, and Backup Protocols
- Formatted Media: Ensure all SD and CFexpress cards are backed up, cleared, and formatted in-camera.
- Redundant Power: Charge all primary batteries, flash power packs, and continuous LED batteries. Keep secondary AC power banks accessible.
2. Light Modifiers and Backdrop Calibration
- Backdrop Hygiene: Check seamless paper rolls for scuffs or tears and roll down fresh sections for full-body portraits.
- Lighting Ratios: Position your key, fill, and rim lights. Take test meter readings using a gray card before talent steps onto the mark.
3. Tethering and Live Review
- Tethered Capture: Run USB-C cables directly to a production laptop using Capture One or Lightroom. This lets directors, clients, and stylists review focus, styling, and color profiles in real time.
4. Client Comfort and Flow
- Maintain designated staging areas for wardrobe styling, hair, and makeup.
- Set the ambient room temperature slightly cool (lights generate heat) and curate a background playlist to set a relaxed, professional tone.
